What is a Tutor?

A tutor helps students learn at home, online or in other non-classroom or school based environment. As children enter senior phase from GR. 7 upwards to Gr. 9 and especially from FET phase (Gr. 10 - Gr. 12) in a traditional school setting, students will move from class to class in order to receive tuition from a teacher who specializes is a particular subject. For home schooling FET phase students either an online or via home schooling (without a curriculum provider), tutors offer essential support or subject specific teaching services.
Our  tutors will assist to improve your child’s studying skills, grades, increase their test and exam results and assist them to reach their full potential.  A tutor helps his or her students to review material and complete assignments from class. Tutors provide a variety of services including reviewing content learnt at school, reviewing material which forms the basis for current material the student may be struggling to grasp, study skills, note-taking strategies, test preparation and homework assistance. Their ultimate goal is to improve a student’s academic performance.
Sitters4U assist’s all age groups up to Gr.12 and we aim to assist with any subject your child may need assistance with. Tutoring can be provided one-on-one, in groups ( (Maximum: 5 children per group of children doing the same subject, in the same grade for the same curriculum).
*Please note we offer discounted rates for groups of children in the same grade, following the same curriculum.

What are our Requirements for Tutors?

Our tutors subscribe to a rigid mandate, they are all experienced. They must have a degree and/or other certified tertiary education related to the subjects they teach or be in the process of completing one. They have immaculate credentials and a genuine interest and passion for teaching.

Our Tutors have:

  • Experience: Tutor and/or teaching and/or facilitation experience with contactable references other than friends or family.
  • Education: A minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or are in the process of completing one. 
  • Vehicles: Their own reliable child safe vehicle and a valid South African driving license.
  • Personality: We prefer working with candidates who are dedicated, organized, friendly, energetic, creative, patient, active and caring. All have a friendly, outgoing and caring personality, a passion and genuine interest in assisting their students to achieve the best results possible.

How do we screen our Tutors?

  • Tutors are personally interviewed and skills assessed by a trained Sitters4U Recruiter.
  • Applying applicants submit copies of ID, drivers license, proof of address, first aid, tertiary certification and criminal clearance which are checked.
  • References are checked by a Sitters4U recruiter or representative.

What does a Tutor earn?

  • Rates are dependent on the experience and education level of the tutor, the number of lessons required weekly, the subject and grade of the child requiring tutoring and if traveling is required.

Rates Range from R 90 per hour at Grade R level at 10 lessons a week to R 490 per hour for maths and science at 1 lesson a week for a HG grade 12.

What are the Duties of a Tutor?

  • Travel to students' homes, libraries, or schools to conduct tutoring sessions.
  • Attending orientation sessions and regular meetings arranged for tutors.
  • Schedule tutoring appointments with students or their parents.
  • Facilitate a learning climate that is open and non-threatening but nonetheless rigorous. The students should be comfortable enough to identify their difficulties openly, to challenge one another and to admit when they "don't know".
  • Research or recommend textbooks, software, equipment, or other learning materials to complement tutoring.
  • Participate in training and development sessions to improve tutoring practices or learn new tutoring techniques.
  • Be familiar with the learning objectives of both the Unit and the programme as a whole as a guide 
    to progressive learning and a backdrop for evaluation.
  • Organize tutoring environment to promote productivity and learning.
  • Review class material with students by discussing text, working solutions to problems, or reviewing worksheets or other assignments.
  • Encourage critical thinking and ensure that the students' knowledge is challenged and probed.
  • Presenting consequences of student conclusions, opposing views, cues as necessary.
  • Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students.
  • Prepare lesson plans or learning modules for tutoring sessions according to students' needs and goals.
  • Maintain records of students' assessment results, progress, feedback, or school performance, ensuring confidentiality of all records.
  • Identify, develop, or implement intervention strategies, tutoring plans, or individualized education plans (IEPs) for students.
  • Develop teaching or training materials, such as handouts, study materials, or quizzes.
  • Communicate students' progress to students, parents or teachers in written progress reports, in person, by phone, or by email.
  • Collaborate with students, parents, teachers, school administrators, or counsellors to determine student needs, develop tutoring plans, or assess student progress.
  • Assess students' progress throughout tutoring sessions.
  • Administer, proctor, or score academic or diagnostic assessments.
  • Teach students study skills, note-taking skills, and test-taking strategies.
  • Provide private instruction to individual or small groups of students to improve academic performance, improve occupational skills, or prepare for academic or occupational tests.
  • Helping students to develop a study plan, considering students goals and programme goal.
