Since 2002
How did you get involved in child care and why are you interested au pairing/ babysitting?I have always been fond of children and thus decided to become a teacher
What is the age of the youngest child you have cared for?3 years
What do you do in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies or other jobs?Fishing, motor cycling, hiking, rugby, cricket
What do you like most about childcare and being part of a childs life?Imparting knowledge and having an influence on the growth and development of the child is the most rewarding
What kinds of activities do you enjoy doing with children?taking the children on outings, playing outdoor activities, swimming, reading
Explain what you would do in case of an emergency?as a first aider I am able to attend to most emergencies while remaining calm. depending on the emergency I will first ensure the child's safety and well being. I will call emergency services as soon as possible or rush the child to the nearest emergency centre. The parents will be notified once the child is in safe hands.
What is the most difficult situation you have encountered while caring for a child? How did you handle it?Over the years as a teacher and child carer I have dealt with many instances, fortunately none too serious. the most difficult situation was dealing with an instance of bullying and I had to act as a mediator between parents as well as the children. firstly I met with both children individually to establish what the possible cause was for the bullying  and how it made each child feel. Thereafter a meeting was held with both parties to discuss the effects of the bullying and how it made them feel. a "contract" or agreement was drawn up where both children signed their name and agreed that the bullying would not happen again and what the consequence would be if either one of them broke the agreement. Fortunately the bullying did not re-occur.
What is your approach to discipline?I have a very positive approach to discipline. My discipline strategy is based on a reward system. I reward positive behaviour. when undesired behaviour is demonstrated or failure to heed instructions, the child may be denied a fun activity or a treat. in some cases the time out strategy is used for the child to reflect. However, it is important that the care giver follows the same discipline strategy that the family implements so as to ensure consistency.
What do you see as your primary responsibility to a child aged 0 to 2 years old?The main objective is to see to the physical well-being of the child ie feeding and bathing and sleeping as well as ensuring the child is happy and content.
Have you ever bathed an infant before? No
Can you prepare meals for infants?Yes
Are you capable of looking after twins?Yes
How do you feel potty training should be approached?Potty training should be done incidentally initially and in a non-pressurised environment. the child should also be rewarded every time he asks to go to the toilet or use the potty on their own. A big emphasis should be on rewarding the desired behaviour.
What role should outdoor play and interaction with other toddlers have in a child´s day?Children learn through play so this is a crucial part of their holistic development. A large part of the day should be spent playing , doing physical activities, and exploring the world around them.
What types of educational activities would you engage a child ages 2 to 3 years old?Children are naturally creative and this needs to be nurtured and encouraged so any art activity of drawing or working with and molding clay is ideal as this is tactile. Water and sand play develops skills of conservation and estimation from an early age. not only are these activities educational but the child is having fun while not necessarily aware that they are learning. Puzzle building and block play have incredible benefits for the young child and I will definitely encourage these activities.
How much television do you feel is appropriate for children aged 3 to 5 years old?I feel television should be minimal at that age as the child should be spending most of the time playing outdoors and taking part in physical activities.
Are you willing to supervise friends of the children who are invited to their home while you are in chargeYes
Are you happy with staying with the children at their extra-curricular activities?Yes
Are you happy to prepack lunches for children?Yes

Thereafter the child will be encouraged to help clean the wall. they will be provided with a special book or equipment to use in future if they wish to draw.
An 8 year old refusing to do homework?it will be explained to the child that they did not receive the homework as a punishment but it is merely to make them "more clever". They will be assured that they will not need to complete their homework on their own but that I will guide and assist them. the child will also be allowed some time to complete their favourite activity once their homework is complete. If the child does not want to do their homework due to being tired they will be given time too take a nap or relax a bit first.

Dinnerfish and salad, chicken and rice and potatoes and vegetables.
Snackfruit, juice, yogurt, nuts.
Is there any type of food you feel uncomfortable cooking?None.
What is your teaching style? (Every student learns differently, which is why it’s impossible for school teachers to structure their classroom lessons to match each individual student’s preferred learning style. The right private tutor, however, can adapt lessons to cater to your child’s strengths whether he is an auditory learner (learns best by listening), visual learner (learns best through sight) or a kinesthetic learner (learns best through experience). Before you hire a tutor, find out if he can structure lessons in a format that is conducive to your child’s preferred learning style.)As a tutor it is vital to get to know the child you are tutoring to enable you to assess what his or her learning style and strength is. Once this has been established you can adapt your lessons to suit that particular child. It is also advisable to use their strength to assist them in the areas in which they are struggling.
Why do you tutor/teach/facilitate?I am passionate about assisting children to to learn about the world around them and to assist them with acquiring knowledge and skills that will help them in the future. I wish to impart my skills and strategies to help them in their schooling career.
Have you ever worked with/ taught children with disabilities? Can you give details on this experience?

Yes. I have worked with many children with learning disabilities, amongst others Autism and FAS - fetal alcohol syndrome.

How can you help a child become an independent learner? (The most effective and valuable tutoring relationships will help the student become a more engaged, independent learner. Memorizing and mastering very specific topics or skills may yield some results, but it is ultimately a short-term solution to the student’s broader educational needs. While certain lessons may focus on a particularly troublesome topic, learning to understand and appreciate the learning process, theory and logic behind concepts will help your child overcome subsequent obstacles, avoid future frustration and flourish as a student.)

The greatest objective for me is to develop a love and desire for learning in the child. Once that desire is there it makes assisting the child to learn independently much sooner. I don't believe in spoon feeding the child when it comes to learning. I use a strategy of scaffolding and using the zone of proximal development where I build on the child's previous knowledge and constantly challenge the child to do an activity or task that is a little bit more challenging than they would be able to independently, while providing guidance and assistance until that skill is mastered. acknowledging and rewarding a child when they have done something independently is crucial. even if they did not succeed in achieving a particular result, the mere fact that they attempted it independently should be celebrated.
