How many years of childcare experience do you currently have?I have been professionally involved in child care since 2011.
How did you get involved in child care and why are you interested au pairing/ babysitting?I have always loved being around children and when my niece was born, I was able to spend a lot of time around her and that made me decide to pursue a career in childcare. I have also always been interested in teaching and hope to be able to study teaching in the next few years.
What kind of outings would you organise for the children?

I love taking children on outings. I will take them to appropriate educational places like the aquarium, the science centre, to the park, butterfly world and other places in and around town.

I will take them swimming and for swimming lessons and to the beach. i am a strong swimmer so they will be safe with me.

What is the age of the youngest child you have cared for?Newborn
What do you do in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies or other jobs?In my spare time I do admin work for a company that runs extramural classes teaching children with lego and other building blocks (I will be teaching there in the next few months), I make and sell my own dolls, reading, swimming, arts and crafts, dancing and spending time with family and friends.
What do you like most about childcare and being part of a child's life?I love the fact that i´m able to be a positive influence in a child´s life and the love and appreciation they give back is one of the best feelings! I also love how they keep my childlike spirit alive.
What kinds of activities do you enjoy doing with children?Arts and crafts, reading, ball games, word/ rhyming games, puzzles, going for walks, building lego and dress up.
Explain what you would do in case of an emergency?I would either take the child to the nearest hospital or call an ambulance/ relevant emergency contact person or perform CPR / medical aid (depending on the emergency) Once the child is in the care of a hospital/ emergency services I would notify the parents immediately.
What is the most difficult situation you have encountered while caring for a child? How did you handle it?I was walking in the area with the little girl I currently look after and we were followed by a suspicious looking man. I remained calm, picked up the child and ran as fast as I could to the nearest school where there was a security guard. The school security then phoned the police to deal with him.
What is your approach to discipline? My number one rule for discipline is consistency. I believe a child won´t take you seriously and will repeat the bad behaviour again if they see that your approach is inconsistent. I will always consider the circumstances and like to hear their side of the story before disciplining (ie : If the child has had a terrible day at school, they might be acting out and then I will try talk things through instead of discipline) . Disciplinary methods are usually what the parents and I agree on, usually time outs or naughty chair but I will never smack a child as a form of discipline, even if the parents are fine with it. I always try to use positive reinforcement instead of discipline.

How would you handle:

A two year old having a tantrum?Remove the object from the child or remove the child from the environment, then a time out until they calm down.
A 5 year old drawing on a wall?Confiscating drawing materials and not allowing drawing as an activity for a certain period of time. They would also (depending on the severity/ behaviour) not be allowed to partake in fun activities for the rest of the day. The child would then be asked to help clean the wall and apologize.
An 8 year old refusing to do homework?Time out and no other activities until homework is done.
Which age groups are you comfortable working with?4 upwards.
Do you still work for any of your previous clients? Which ones?Yes. I babysit for all of my previous clients except for 2 of them which I am no longer in contact with.
Do you have any children of your own? If so, how old are they?No
Please tell us a bit more about how you would describe yourself?I am a very approachable, warm and friendly person. I have a bubbly personality and love engaging with people. I love having fun and always try make each situation more interesting. Despite my gentle nature, I am also quite firm and strong willed.
Can you cook? (give an example of a breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack)Yes
BreakfastEggs, toast, tomato and mushrooms with fruit on the side
LunchChicken, broccoli, pesto and parmesan pasta with veggies
DinnerCottage pie, roast chicken and veggies
SnackProvita´s with cheese / fruit
Is there any type of food you feel uncomfortable cooking?Anything that is too complicated and requires too much attention. I feel I can´t look after the children 100% if I´m paying too much attention to the cooking.
What types of educational activities would you engage a child ages 2 to 3 years old?

I play the same games with all children, just on different levels that are age appropriate.

I love doing puzzles, playing word games, teaching them rhymes, playing with flash cards, and matching games. Outside I will take walks with them, teach them to cycle, take them to a playground with a jungle gym and other out door facilities. I like making obstacle courses outside.
What role should outdoor play and interaction with other toddlers have in a child´s day?It is very important for children of all ages to play outside. It is crucial for their development and I prefer spending time with children outside, doing fun educational activities like playing with different textures and with water and sand and on the grass. It is important for children to socialize at any age otherwise they become withdrawn so they need to play with other children their age.
Would you consider yourself to be organized and punctual? I have always naturally been a structured person, but au paring has made me extremely organized.
Are you happy to prepack lunches for children?
Yes. This could even be a fun activity we can do together.
What age appropriate activities would you do with the children aged 5 to 12 years old?

Puzzles, building blocks, picture match cards, balancing, lots of word games, all age appropriate of course. We will make up stories together and they will be encourage to be creative with various arts and crafts activities.

I will take them to Rondebosch common for treasure hunts and play lots of board games like Monopoly with them.
Are you happy with staying with the children at their extra-curricular activities?Yes I am happy to stay with the children at their extra-curricular activities.
Are you willing to supervise friends of our children who are invited to our home while you are in charge?Yes I am willing to look after other children on play dates.
How do you handle a crying baby?I check if the baby needs a new nappy, is hungry or thirsty, or maybe tired. If all the basic needs are met, I will take the baby for a walk in the pram to attract his attention away from himself.
What do you see as your primary responsibility to a child aged 0 to 2 years old?I have to keep the child alive, happy and healthy.
How would you handle a child aged 2 to 3 years old having a temper tantrum in a public place?I would remove the child to a place of safety and take the child home where we can do activities that the child finds relaxing and stimulating and that would calm the child down.
How do you feel potty training should be approached?
I do not really have experience with potty training but the girl I am currently working with, occasionally has an accident in her pants and I handle this with sensitivity. I would never punish but always reward correct potty training behaviour, for instance, praise the child every time he remembers to use the potty.
Are you comfortable reviewing and assisting with my children’s homework?Yes I am very comfortable helping children with their home work.
What methods of limit setting or discipline do you find effective for children aged 3 to 5 years old?
It depend on what the parents dictate about discipline but I find if they have a bit of time out it works most of the time.
What television shows do you feel are appropriate for children aged 3 to 5 years old?
? How much television do you feel is appropriate for children aged 3 to 5 years old?
If  children are allowed television at all I think it should be for just a very short time.they should watch age appropriate educational programs. the children I currently work with are not allowed any television and just watch a very occasional movie on the computer.
Please tell us a bit more about your family?.

I have a very close relationship with my entire family. I live with my sister and niece in Cape Town, my parents live in Durban and my other sister and her family live in England. We don´t see the overseas family very often but skype with them on a regular basis! My family is always there to help each other and our visits are always very special when we are together.

My mom is a house wife who runs the house hold. My dad has his own estate agency and my one sister  runs an egg donation company. My sister that stays in England runs an old fashioned sweet shop together with her husband.

Made with love by Artificial Studio - awesome design for web & email.
