Questions

How many years of childcare experience do you currently have? I have been involved professionally in childcare since 2003.
How did you get involved in child care and why are you interested au pairing/ babysitting?I got involved in child care at the fairly young age of 16. I started off by baby sitting my younger sibling when she was 10 years old. I am interested in au pairing/babysitting as I am passionate about children. I am a mother of two children. My daughter is 4 years of age and my son is 3 months old. I have a great passion for working with children of all ages and truly believe they have so much to teach us as parents and adults. In return, we are blessed with the privilege and opportunity to guide them through life and be there to witness their growth. My passion lies in teaching along with having fun with children. I have ambitions to run my own school as well as teaching, in the long term. However, in the meantime, I would still like to keep interacting with children by helping them learn and grow in whatever way might be necessary. Being a mother myself, I understand the challenges that arise when work and/or personal obligations necessitate me spending time away from my children. With that in mind, I value a safe and structured environment for my children; one which allows them to grow and continually feel comfortable and safe whilst not in my care.
What is the age of the youngest child you have cared for?Newborn.
Have you had any children of your own?
Yes, 2012 AND 2016
What activities are you involved in?I belong to Shapes for women gym and go for long walks and runs.

What do you like most about childcare and being part of a child's life?I have a great passion for working with children of all ages and truly believe they have so much to teach us as parents and adults. In return, we are blessed with the privilege and opportunity to guide them through life and be there to witness their growth.
What kinds of activities do you enjoy doing with children?I enjoy doing arts and crafts with children. Age appropriate educational as well as physical activities that encourage development of coordination and fine and gross motor skills. Relaxing watching their favourite TV shows or movies. Using dolls or objects to act out fun scenarios that encourages them to use their imagination. Swimming or sports that interest the children.
Explain what you would do in case of an emergency? If the situation required immediate action i would first remain calm. If needed i would start mouth to mouth or if there is excessive bleeding i would try stop or slow down the bleeding by wrapping the wound or applying pressure. Once stable i would call emergency services and wait for their arrival while caring for the person or child in whatever way is needed. There are many different scenarios that could happen and each situation might require different action.
What is the most difficult situation you have encountered while caring for a child? How did you handle it?I was collecting a child from school and as she was running to collect her school bag she fell and cut her chin open and knocked her two front teeth out. While running to the child I took my jersey off, I picked her up, applied pressure to her chin with my jersey in my hand and I made her bite on the sleeve of the jersey at the same time to try slow down the bleeding. I knew the wound required stitches and we were close to Olivedale Clinic. I put her in the car, strapped her in, calmly told her to continue putting pressure on her chin and continue biting down. I drove steadily and safely to Casualty and informed the nurses of what had happened. While filling out the necessary information on the forms I called her parents to inform them of what had happened. I went with her into the doctors room and sat with her and kept her calm while they performed the necessary procedures on her to fix her up.
What is your approach to discipline? The first time I need to discipline I calmly and firmly state what the inappropriate behavior is that needs to change or stop and I explain why. If it continues I explain again. If it happens a third time I use disciplinary measures that the parents themselves have requested I use, for example naughty corner or taking away a privilege. I do not smack or spank a child or use physical force . I always try to use positive reinforcement.

How would you handle:

A two year old having a tantrum?I would first try to distract them. Secondly I would talk to the child and help them feel that I am there to help by making them feel safe and cared for. If this does not calm them I will calmly sit nearby to make sure they do not hurt themselves and so that they know that i am there for them so as not to feel alone, scared or even more so out of control. Once the child has calmed down, I would comfort them and talk briefly with them and very simply work through their feelings with them so both of us could understand why the child was feeling so upset or angry. From there I would move onto an activity with them. With a two year old it is not always easy to talk them through a situation so one needs to make sure that the child feels that you are there every step of the way as they already feel scared and out of control.
A 5 year old drawing on a wall?I would lower myself to their eye level and kindly ask that the child stops drawing on the wall and ask that they put the crayon away or pass the crayon to me. I will ask why they drew on the wall, acknowledge what they have said. I will explain why they cannot draw on the wall and ask that they help we clean the drawings off of the wall.
An 8 year old refusing to do homework?I will explain why homework is so important and the consequences of not completing the homework. if this does not work I will put the appropriate ultimatums in place. If the child will still not comply I will explain the them their appropriate punishment as discussed with their parents.
Which age groups are you comfortable working with?I would be happy with working with any age below 17 years of age.
Do you still work for any of your previous clients? Which ones?Yes, I do.
Do you have any children of your own? If so, how old are they?Yes, 2 children. My daughter  born in 2012 and a son born in 2016.
Please tell us a bit more about how you would describe yourself?I am a compassionate and friendly person with ambition and perseverance. I am firm and stand by what I believe in when needed. I am flexible and outgoing.
Can you cook? (give an example of a breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack)Yes
BreakfastOmelet or cereal
LunchSandwiches
DinnerFish fingers and chips or chicken and veggies with rice
SnackFruit roll or yogurt
Is there any type of food you feel uncomfortable cooking? No
Please tell us a bit more about your family? Eg. Do you have brothers and sisters? How old are they? What do your parents do?Are your parents still married? etc.My immediate family and I are all very close. We are very affectionate and loving towards each other. We have an open communications relationship while respecting each others personal space, opinions and needs. We spend a lot of our free time together and all go by the same principle in life. Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself as well as always trying to have a positive outlook. My daughter has a very close relationship and bond with my sister, her aunt and my mother, her grandmother as they are actively involved in her life. Family is one of the greatest treasures in life and the relationships need to be cherished and looked after because family is ones pillar of strength through the tough times and greatest source of encouragement and support though the great times.
