Period and reason for leavingI was there for 12 months. My visa had expired and so i had to leave the United States of America.
Number of children, age and gender of the children when you started?A little girl aged 2 and her brother aged 5.
What were your duties?I had to potty train the little girl and teach her her ABC´s and counting from 1-10. We sang songs and read books and we went to the park and played outside in the yard. I had to fetch her brother from school everyday, made both of them snacks and lunch everyday as well as dinner on occasion only. During the summer we would go to the Zoo and to Museums and the park and have play dates with friends of theirs in the area. We would all play board games together and have as much fun as we could.
Your comments on the experience with this positionWas an unforgettable experience to live in a home with people you hardly knew. Spending time and watching each of them grow into the people they will be someday was just wonderful. I learnt a lot about myself as well as the right way to treat a child at the age they at. I would do it again if I ever had the opportunity. I made many friends and the children I looked after were just amazing and I had the opportunity to see them grow and be strong. That was more than enough for me.

Questions

Please tell us a bit more about the courses you are currently busy with, if any and also a bit more about where you see yourself in 5 years? I am currently doing my Bcom in Marketing through Unisa. I have done a course in Events Coordinating and Conference Planning. Also did a First Aid Course while I was in America. I see myself in a good and stable job doing events planning. I hope to open my own company sometime in the future.
How did you get involved in child care and why are you interested au pairing/ babysitting?I have always wanted to be an Au Pair. Ever since I can first remember. I have always loved being around children. I always helped with my younger cousins when my aunt needed me to.Children have an amazing warmth to them and know how to make you smile no matter how bad you may be feeling. I got involved in child care when I was 12 and helped with my cousins :) I then realised that I wanted to be an Au Pair I just was not sure how of course. So I did babysitting for relatives now and then. When I was in high school that's how I found out about Au Pair in America and so I did that. While applying for that I had to work at a Nursery School to gain experience. While I  was there, as a volunteer, I gained over 500 hours working experience with children aged from 3 months to 3 years old.
What is the age of the youngest child you have cared for?A couple of weeks old.
What activities are you involved in?I love to paint and to read a good book now and then. I love to travel and that's why i did Au Pair in America too. It was a two in one. Could Au Pair and travel, what more could i have expected :)
What do you do in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies or other jobs?I currently do not have any other jobs. I do however bake now and then at home, cook dinner, take the dogs for a walk and spend time with family and friends.
What are your interests?Reading and Painting are big interests for me. I also love to sing and did singing till I left high school.
What do you like most about childcare and being part of a childs life? The warmth and unconditional love that a child can give to you and anyone. How strong their minds really are that they know when things are not right and hidden from them. I love that I can be goofy around a child and they really find it fun. You can have unlimited amounts of fun with children and you also learn from them no matter how big or small they are. I love how creative such a young mind can be. So imaginative and confident.
What kinds of activities do you enjoy doing with children?Singing and dancing is the most fun with children. Playing Twister with them is just too cute. Having them tell you a story and acting it out. Going to the park and to the Zoo. There are so many awesome things to do with children.
Explain what you would do in case of an emergency?Naturally it depends what the emergency is. But if it were an emergency where the child was choking, they would be coughing as it would be stuck in the throat. So i would bend the child over my leg slightly and tap between the shoulder blades and tell them to continue coughing as it is helping the object come up. Well doing so if there is someone else in your view you get them to call the emergency number and the parents.
What is the most difficult situation you have encountered while caring for a child? How did you handle it?The 2 year old that I looked after in America tripped while running with her brother. She bit straight into her tongue. There was allot of blood coming out naturally. I did not panic as that can cause her to feel more afraid than she already did feel. I held a tissue there and held her close to me and told her that it is ok that everything was going to be ok that she did not have to worry. I also told her that I knew that it hurt and it was an accident but again i said to her you are ok. We then went home and she was fine, she stopped crying and the bleeding has subsided. I took some ice and allowed her to suck on that for a bit. And she did great, she was strong and calm but only because i too remained calm.
What is your approach to discipline? All children do need discipline and stability. I never hit children as i feel that is the parents duty. I have no right to do that to that to any child. I send them to time out and once they come out after the time they in I ask them for the reason they were in time out for.

How would you handle:

A two year old having a tantrum? The 2 year old I looked after had many of those. They were all for different reasons of course. Her brother and herself fight over many things, the chair they would sit on was one of them. Her brother was sitting on her chair and she did not want him there. So she started having a tantrum. All I did was tell her I am going to count to 10 and she must stop crying and get on the chair that's empty or she can go and sit in the corner and calm down by herself. I got to 6 and she stopped crying. I carried on counting and she said to me why you still counting if I stopped crying. So I just said you need to choose get on the chair that's available or go sit in the corner for a while. She replied to me OK with a big sigh.
A 5 year old drawing on a wall?I would tell the 5 year old how bad it is and that you should not do that. If you wanted to draw you could have come and asked for a piece of paper. Go sit in the corner for a while. I would then tell him that he needs to come and help clean it up and I would tell the parents of the situation and allow them to handle it.
An 8 year old refusing to do homework?I would say to the 8 year old go take a 2 minute break.I would explain why they need to do homework. Try and make it fun for them.
Which age groups are you comfortable working with?1 year old to 6 year old
Do you still work for any of your previous clients? Which ones? No, I don't.
Do you have any children of your own? If so, how old are they? No, I do not have any children of my own.
Please tell us a bit more about how you would describe yourself?I am outgoing and friendly. I am very soft hearted when it comes to people I love and am very close to. I am reliable and responsible. I am always wiling to help wherever there is help needed. I am loyal and trustworthy person. Many find it easy to talk to me about anything as I am approachable and caring.
Can you cook? (give an example of a breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack)Yes
BreakfastCereal or fruit. On occasion eggs, bacon or toast with jam.
LunchOne piece of fruit. If not fruit then one side of vegetables. With sausage, or chicken or I would make them a sandwich or a hot dog or something. There will always be fruit or a vegetable on the plate during the time that I work.
DinnerPasta dishes, Stew, fish and chips with a side of vegetables, roast chicken with rice and vegetables and gravy. Anything really.
SnackFruit, crackers, yoghurt,.
Is there any type of food you feel uncomfortable cooking? No, I am fine cooking any types of foods.
Please tell us a bit more about your family? Eg. Do you have brothers and sisters? How old are they? What do your parents do?Are your parents still married? etc.I have a younger sister she is 17. My parents are divorced and have been for a very long time. My mom is currently unemployed and my dad is a Quantity Surveyor. My family and I are very close. We stay close by and can rely on one another when necessary. We see each other almost every weekend and go away on vacations together.
