Questions

Please tell us a bit more about the courses you are currently busy with, if any and also a bit more about where you see yourself in 5 years? I am not currently busy with any courses as I have not as yet discovered my passion in life. I do know that I enjoy being around children so in the next 5 years I see myself probably au pairing overseas.
How did you get involved in child care and why are you interested au pairing/ babysitting?I started working at The Secret Jungle (Used to be Kiddiewinkels) because I wanted to start working with children and the working place was in a close in vicinity. I want to au pair because I enjoy being around children and its a good job in which I can maybe travel someday.
What is the age of the youngest child you have cared for?The youngest child I have cared for is 2 years old.
What activities are you involved in?I currently only go to gym.
What do you do in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies or other jobs?I do not have any other jobs but I do go to the gym, or take my dog for a walk. I enjoy just listening to music or going shopping with my little sister.
What are your interests? My interests are music, movies and animals.
What do you like most about childcare and being part of a child's life?I like the part where just being around a child makes you feel young again and you can forget about all the stresses in your life and just act like a kid. I am a child at heart and I love cartoons and doing various activities with children.
What kinds of activities do you enjoy doing with children?Activities I enjoy doing with children are playing games like hide and go seek, colouring in, drawing, painting, running games, and swimming etc.
Explain what you would do in case of an emergency?I would call the emergency number given to be and use my First Aid skills I have to help the situation whatever it may be. I am very calm in moments of emergency so I will be able to stay calm and asses the situation, and then make a decision as to what to do.
What is the most difficult situation you have encountered while caring for a child? How did you handle it?Last year one of the children at the school was on the swings, and he began to twist the swing around causing the rope to get caught around his neck and cut off circulation to him and caused him to stop breathing. I quickly got him lose from the swing, checked his pulse and his breathing. We then sat him down and gave him some juice for sugar which helped him to calm down, and start breathing normally again, I also lay him down in a recovery position and gave him a blanket as he was in shock.
What is your approach to discipline? My approach to discipline is to be firm but in a calm and peaceful way. I believe you must enforce your rules of discipline in a firm way so that the children know what is right and what is wrong.

How would you handle:

A two year old having a tantrum?I would tell the child in a firm way that he/she must stop having a tantrum and if they continue I will firmly suggest that if they do not stop having a tantrum they will simply not be allowed a treat e.g sweets or television or no playing games.
A 5 year old drawing on a wall?I would take the crayon away and tell the child that what they did was very wrong and it must not be done again. I would then show the child how to clean it off and they would assist me in cleaning it.
An 8 year old refusing to do homework?I would say in a firm tone that they have to do their homework, otherwise they wont be able to watch television, eat sweets or play games etc.
Which age groups are you comfortable working with?I am most comfortable working with children between the ages of 2 to 14 years old.
Do you still work for any of your previous clients? Which ones?No I don't work at present.
Do you have any children of your own? If so, how old are they?No I don't have any children of my own.
Please tell us a bit more about how you would describe yourself?I would describe myself as a caring, loving and nurturing person. I am an emotional person who cares deeply for my friends and family. I can be quite shy when around a group of strangers but as you get to know me I warm up to people quickly. I love music and watching movies, especially old-school Disney cartoons.
Can you cook? (give an example of a breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack)Yes I can cook.
